THE ROADMAP TO BUSINESS ANALYST CERTIFICATION

If you want to become a certified business analyst then you must be ready to go the mile irrespective of how the road appears; rocky, stony, tortuous etc. In this article we shall be considering the roadmap to business analyst certification, showing you what it takes and what it means to you.

What does business analyst certification mean to me?

This is a very important question. You should want to know why you should even consider business analyst certification. I mean, there are many successful business analysts who are not certified. Business analysis has been around for quite a while now before the recent advent of a certification process. So why should anyone bother about being certified? Well, there are many ways to answer this question. First we are in changing times and very different times too. The times are changing means anyone that fails to change with it becomes old fashioned very quickly. Secondly the times are different because the economic climate is not what it once was. We live in a time where the job per applicant ratio doesn't favour the jobs. People are being laid off from their jobs and most times it is those who aren't professionals or certified in a particular field than tends to suffer.

This is not different when it comes to business analysis. It is no longer enough that one has ample experience working as a business analyst and helping businesses solve their problems through a suggested computer-base approach. Some years ago one who could do this would easily pass for a good business analyst but today, one is required to use that experience and knowledge in passing an exam that contains 150 questions based on Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK); an exam that spans for three and a half hours. This is no easy task, but the edge it offers in a competitive field is vital in getting a job and retaining it, in an economic setting that is low on job security.

How does the Road to Certification Look like?

The answer to this question is simple because it depends on who is looking and from what angle they are looking at it from. If one is considering business analysis certification unnecessary and needless, then they will no doubt see the road to certification as difficult because they will consider it as an unnecessary road to pass. But if they see the road towards certification as one that is needful and will help them improve their status and résumé in the field of business analysis, they will see the road as one filled with so much possibilities.

Key points to always remember when preparing for certification

Below are some of the vital points that one must keep in mind to ensure that their journey towards certification is not an uncomfortable one.

  • AM I ELIGIBLE: In business analysis certification, eligibility is a major factor. In order words, not everyone is considered eligible to take the exam. There are several things that are considered like experience, educational background and references. One must be sure that they are eligible before they consider buying application or buying study materials.

  • IF I'M NOT ELIGIBLE: This is easy, if you are not eligible, you simply consider the factor(s) that has made it so and move towards getting yourself eligible. If you have not worked for sufficient amount of time, then get to work, it is as simple as that. Meet up with the eligibility requirement and continue on to the next step.

  • Prepare Yourself Mentality: It is vital that you are mentally prepared for what lies ahead. The work it's going to take, the amount it's going to cost and the best way to prepare yourself is to keep your eyes focused on the prize; in this case, being certified.

  • BABOK means you mean Business: When you want to start preparing, you must get your materials ready. One of the materials that will show everyone that you mean business is the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge because this is where the questions are set from. Also ensure that you use other study materials that are available online.

  • Nerves: Some people don't do well in tests or exams not because they find the exam difficult but they find it difficult to control their nerves. This is not something that should be done on the day of the exam. This is something you work your mind into long before exam day, by keeping an optimistic attitude and a positive mind.
